South Lake Leisure Centre
A new build indoor leisure centre in Craigavon
In 2008 the former Craigavon Borough Council agreed to invest in its indoor leisure centre service to align with modern standards. Following the 2015 Reform of Local Government the new ABC Council endorsed the decision and instructed the development of a new leisure centre on a Council site in Craigavon and the closure of three local and ageing centres.
This is a new build project comprising over 15,000m2 of internal floor area and over four floors. It is designed to BREEAM ‘very good’ classification in terms of sustainability and to DSNI ISF ‘excellent’ accreditation, meaning accessibility for all users has been carefully considered in the design.
The dryside comprises the following:
- 1,000m2 fitness suite (with GP referral unit)
- Health and wellbeing centre
- Spin studio
- Two dance studios
- Four activity rooms
- 8-court sports hall
- Soft play area
- Sensory room
- 2 squash courts
The wetside comprises the following:
- 50m main pool (with moveable floors and drown detection system)
- 20m learner pool (with drown detection system)
- Leisure pool with flumes.
The Scheme also includes a dedicated water sports centre, a valuable USP due to its lakeside location.
The project, with a build value of c£35m, was procured under the SCAPE Procure Framework and Farrans are the lead constructor. In addition, Farrans’ commitment to placing a significant amount of expenditure in the NI economy has translated into c£25m with a c£6.5m additionality in salaries to the local economy.
With a build period of two years, and following a five week delay due to Covid-19, handover date is forecast to be mid-September 2020 with opening to the public on 2nd November 2020.
SIB deployed a Project Director from July 2016.
